Tara or Ārya Tārā, also known as Jetsun Dölma (Tibetan language:rje btsun sgrol ma), is a female Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism who appears as a female Buddha in Vajrayana Buddhism. Her name means "mother of liberation", and she is well-known for the swift activity in protecting beings from different fears, harm and calamities. This thangka depicts the twenty-one forms of Tara accepted by the four schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
